Illuminated Roaming Performance for Light Nights

Bringing live performance, family engagement and human connection to Light Night programmes through street theatre

Alongside the light art, projections and installations at the heart of a Light Night, live performance can bring an important human dimension to the programme. The Show Globe offers exactly that: roaming street theatre performance structures which are illuminated, with push-button special effects, that actively connect with the people attending.

Each Show Globe is a richly imagined theatrical world that glides through the event, bringing its scenery, music and central character directly into the audience. The Mystic draws individuals into powerful encounters before audience-triggered effects transform the light inside her mirrored world and send fragments of light out from the Globe. Floris tends an enchanted oversized garden filled with flowers and curious little creatures; a graceful Mermaid carries her ethereal underwater realm through the crowd; and the Snow Queen brings a traditional winter world to life with spectacular snowstorms.

Through expressive physical theatre and close-up interaction, the characters reach beyond the Globe and invite audiences into their worlds. They notice individual spectators, respond to their reactions and transform chance encounters into spontaneous moments of theatre. Children and adults are not simply watching something illuminated pass by—they are being seen, engaged and drawn into the magic.

This combination of visual presence, roaming movement and intimate performance makes The Show Globe a valuable complement to a diverse Light Night programme. It provides an accessible point of engagement for families and audiences of all ages while remaining visually at home within the wider illuminated event.

Light Night unique Show Globes

The human connection within a Light Night programme

Light installations naturally encourage audiences to look, explore and move between locations. The Show Globe introduces moments in which the event appears to notice them back.

As each Show Globe glides through the event area, the character inside responds to the people around them through mime, expressive physical theatre, playful encounters and moments of intimate performance. A glance, a beckoning hand or a playful exchange can draw one person into the performance, while the surrounding audience shares in the unfolding encounter.

Children and adults are invited to come closer, interact with the character and become part of the experience. Because the performance is non-verbal, every interaction can develop naturally from the audience’s reactions, making each encounter personal and slightly different. These spontaneous moments create warmth, curiosity and connection within the larger visual journey of a Light Night.

More than illuminated spectacle

The lighting within each Show Globe brings its scenery, costume and character beautifully to life after dark—but illumination is only one part of the experience.

Each Globe contains a fully imagined world, created through detailed scenery, costume, music, character and special effects. The audience encounters that world at close range, with the transparent structure creating the magical impression of a character travelling inside their own living environment.

At the heart of every Globe is live theatrical interaction. Characters communicate through physical storytelling, drawing audiences into playful, powerful or quietly captivating encounters. Audiences gather around, meet the character at close range and discover what happens when they press the large button on the outside.

Each Globe has its own audience-triggered special effects, allowing spectators to physically create a moment of shared magic. The audience is not simply observing the work; it becomes part of the performance.

Engagement for families and audiences of all ages

The Show Globe offers an immediate and welcoming point of engagement within a Light Night programme, particularly for families. It gives visitors the opportunity to shift from observing the programme to participating in a live theatrical encounter.

There is no language barrier, no fixed start time and no formal threshold to participation. Audiences encounter the work naturally as it moves through the event, become absorbed in the character’s world, stay for a close-up interaction and then continue exploring the wider programme.

This makes The Show Globe a particularly effective piece for:

  • Creating family-focused engagement within a varied artistic programme
  • Bringing physical theatre and character interaction alongside installations
  • Connecting different areas of a Light Night through roaming movement
  • Animating routes and spaces between larger artworks
  • Offering audiences an accessible and memorable theatrical encounter

Experienced at Umbra Light Festival

The Show Globe’s ability to create personal moments within a larger light festival programme was beautifully captured following our appearance at Umbra Light Festival 2026:

“We booked two different shows from The Show Globe to perform together at the Umbra Light Festival 2026: the Enchanted Flower Globe and the Mystic Mirror Globe. Communication with The Show Globe throughout the booking process was straightforward, fast, and very well-coordinated.

We received very positive feedback from the public. It was fascinating to witness the interactions, audience engagement, and the smiles on the faces of both young and old. I especially remember the reaction of a girl—around six or eight years old—the excitement on her face, and her mother’s smile as she saw her daughter’s joy.

I love The Show Globe; I have already recommended it to other light festival directors, and I will continue to do so.”

Four illuminated theatrical worlds

Each Show Globe contains a completely different character, atmosphere and magical world. Scenery, costume, music, lighting and physical performance combine to create four distinct theatrical encounters:

  • The Mystic Mirror Globe – The Mystic inhabits a powerful world of mirrors and reflection, silently selecting individuals from the audience and drawing them into thought-provoking encounters shaped by choice, perception and human connection. When the audience presses the button, changing light transforms the mirrored interior and sends fragments of light out from the Globe.
  • The Enchanted Flower Globe – Floris moves through a vivid oversized garden, tending her flowers and introducing audiences to the curious little creatures that live among them.
  • The Sea Sphere – A graceful Mermaid carries her ethereal underwater world through the event, inviting audiences into her realm before a touch of the button sends bubbles cascading out into the crowd.
  • The Living Snow Globe – The Snow Queen brings a traditional winter scene to life through graceful performance, playful interaction and spectacular snowstorms triggered by the audience.

The acts can be booked individually or presented in combinations of up to four. Programming several Globes creates greater scale and variety, with different theatrical encounters appearing throughout the event.
